Reuters – U.S. President Donald Trump’s lead lawyer in the special counsel investigation into Russia’s role in the 2016 presidential election, John Dowd, resigned on Thursday, the same week Trump added another Washington lawyer to his team.
“I love the president and wish him well,” the 77 year old Dowd told Reuters in an email Thursday. In a telephone interview he later declined to explain why he resigned.
The New York Times cited a source who said Trump was increasingly ignoring Dowd’s advice, possibly leading to his dismissal. Trump and Dowd both said the parting was “mutual”.
Trump hired attorney and former federal prosecutor Joseph diGenova to his legal team on Monday. diGenova says there is a conspiracy to “frame” Donald Trump by the Justice Department and FBI to clear Hillary Clinton of any wrongdoing, and said former FBI Director James Comey tried to ruin Trump with an investigation into possible collusion between his 2016 campaign and Russia.
